Toronto & GTA • HomeStars Award Winner
Do you have an old stucco ceiling in your Toronto or GTA home? You’re not alone. Thousands of homes across Toronto that were built in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s still have stucco ceilings, also called textured ceilings,
popcorn ceilings, stipple, or California texture. Whatever you call yours, it’s outdated. And we remove all of it.
At Master of Ceilings, we’ve specialized in stucco ceiling removal across Toronto and the GTA since 2010. That’s 15+ years of focused experience.
We’ve removed stucco from thousands of homes – older bungalows in Cooksville, Cabbagetown century homes, North York 1970s
detached homes, Scarborough split-levels, and luxury homes in The Kingsway.
We’re 12-time HomeStars award winners – Best of the Best 2025 (4 times) and Best of Awards 2026 (8 times). Hundreds of 5-star reviews on Google and HomeStars. When you choose us, you choose Toronto’s most awarded ceiling specialist.
We use Festool and Mirka professional sanding equipment with HEPA-filter vacuums for dust-controlled removal. Multi-layer plaster application. Level 5 skim coat finish – the luxury custom home standard. Plus optional Benjamin Moore premium paint to complete the transformation.
Here’s exactly how we transform your old stucco ceiling into a smooth modern finish. Every job follows the same proven 6-step process – clean, careful, and dust-controlled from start to finish.
We start by covering your floors, furniture, and walls to ensure your home stays clean. Dust control measures are put in place before we begin.
Our trained team carefully removes the stucco texture using professional Festool and Mirka tools with proven techniques. We handle each ceiling with precision to avoid damage to the drywall underneath.
Once the texture is removed, we inspect the ceiling, patch any cracks, and apply a skim coat to create a perfectly smooth surface.
We sand the surface using professional, low-dust equipment to get that flawless finish.
We offer ceiling painting services to complete the transformation and give your home a clean, modern finish.
When the job is done, we make sure your space is clean and ready to enjoy.
Let’s talk straight about pricing. Most stucco ceiling removal projects in the GTA range from $3 to $8 per square foot. That’s our base range. What determines where your project lands?
Heavy 1960s-70s stucco takes longer to remove than lighter 1990s stipple or California texture. Older, thicker texture means more labour.
Bigger jobs often cost less per square foot. A 1,200 sq ft main floor will have a better per-foot price than a single 200 sq ft bedroom.
Painted stucco takes longer to remove than unpainted. The paint adds time but doesn't dramatically change the price.
For homes built before the mid-1970s, we recommend testing. Testing costs $50-$150 per sample. We arrange certified Ontario lab testing for you.
Level 5 (perfectly smooth, luxury finish) costs slightly more than Level 4 (basic smooth). Most customers choose Level 5 because the difference is worth it.
Adding professional painting costs $1.50-$3 per square foot extra. Most customers add this so the whole transformation happens in one project.
This matters more with stucco than with newer textures. Stucco ceilings are usually the oldest ones in the house — 1960s and 1970s — which is exactly the era when asbestos was common in ceiling material. If your home was built before the mid-1970s, your stucco ceiling MIGHT contain asbestos. Not always. The only way to know is to test it. We’ve worked on hundreds of older Toronto homes and we know exactly how to handle this.
We take a small sample of your ceiling material and send it to an accredited Ontario lab. Results come back in 2-5 business days in writing. Once we have results, we walk you through your options honestly — no pressure either way.
If your sample tests positive for asbestos, we recommend encapsulation in most cases. Here's how it works: we cover the ceiling with multi-layer plaster and a Level 5 skim coat. The asbestos stays sealed inside permanently — no dust, no danger, no disturbance. You get a beautiful smooth modern ceiling without the risks (or cost) of full removal. Encapsulation is recognized as safe by Health Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Labour. It's also faster (3-7 days vs 2-4 weeks for full Type 3 abatement) and significantly cheaper ($4-$9/sq ft vs $15-$30/sq ft).
If your test comes back negative — or your home was built after the mid-1970s and asbestos is unlikely — we proceed with standard dust-controlled removal using our HEPA-filter equipment.
Master of Ceilings is NOT certified for Type 3 asbestos abatement (full removal). We provide asbestos TESTING and ENCAPSULATION only. If you need full Type 3 abatement, we'll refer you to a certified abatement specialist we trust. We don't pretend to do work we're not qualified for — that honesty is part of why our customers trust us.
At Master of Ceilings, ceiling work isn’t just one of the things we do—it’s all we do. With a focus on quality and attention to detail, here’s what makes us the go-to ceiling specialists in Toronto and the GTA:
We treat your home like our own and take pride in delivering ceilings that truly transform the space.
Hi, I’m Sony. I founded Master of Ceilings in 2010 with one mission: bring true European craftsmanship to Toronto homes.
For over 15 years, my team and I have removed stucco from thousands of ceilings — across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, and the entire GTA. I’ve taken heavy 1970s stucco off Etobicoke bungalows. I’ve removed California texture from Mississauga split-levels. I’ve stripped stucco from both walls and ceilings in century Cabbagetown homes. Every home teaches me something new.
“I treat every home like it’s my own. If it’s not perfect, I don’t leave.”
I’m on every job site personally. No subcontractors. No shortcuts. Just clean work, fair pricing, and ceilings that last. When you call 647-972-4858, you talk to me. When my team arrives, I’m there. That’s how Master of Ceilings has been since day one, and that’s how it stays.

Different generations call them different names. Stucco usually refers to older, heavier textures from the 1960s-70s. Popcorn refers to lighter sprayed acoustic texture from the 1970s-90s. California texture is a knockdown style. We remove all of them and finish smooth.
If your Toronto home was built before the mid-1970s, possibly yes. We arrange testing through certified Ontario labs ($50-$150 per sample) and offer encapsulation if asbestos is present – safely covering the ceiling with plaster permanently. We are NOT certified for Type 3 asbestos removal, only testing and encapsulation.
Most jobs are $3-$8 per square foot. Heavier stucco may cost slightly more. We give you a free written quote with no hidden fees.
Single room: 1-2 days. Main floor: 3-5 days. Full home: 5-7 days. Heavily textured ceilings take a bit longer.
No. We use Festool and Mirka HEPA-filter vacuum sanders. Most customers are surprised how clean we leave the home.
Yes. Some older homes have stucco on both ceilings and walls – common in century Toronto homes in Cabbagetown, The Annex, and Riverdale. We handle both.
No. Most customers stay home. We seal off the work area and use HEPA dust extraction, so the rest of your house stays livable. We usually work one room or one floor at a time.
We can, but we rarely recommend it. Matching old stucco never looks quite right once it’s painted. Most customers are happier going smooth — it’s a much bigger improvement for a similar amount of work.
Optional, and most customers say yes. We use Benjamin Moore premium ceiling paint. It adds $1.50-$3 per square foot and means the whole transformation happens in one project.
Yes. Every project includes a 1-year written workmanship warranty. If anything isn’t right within that year, we come back and fix it.
