Ceiling Skimming & Plastering in Toronto & GTA

Multi-Layer Skim Coat for a Luxury Smooth Ceiling Finish

Transform your outdated, bumpy, or damaged ceiling into a smooth, modern surface with professional ceiling skimming and plastering. The same Level 5 finishing standard used in luxury custom homes — delivered by Toronto’s most awarded ceiling specialists since 2010.

The Art of Level 5 Ceiling Skimming

Ceiling skimming and plastering is the art of applying multiple thin layers of plaster (also called a skim coat) over an existing ceiling to create a perfectly smooth surface. It’s the same Level 5 finishing standard used in luxury custom homes across the GTA — and it’s what makes the difference between an average ceiling and a stunning one.

At Master of Ceilings, I’ve been specializing in ceiling skimming since 2010 — over 15 years of focused experience with this exact technique. We apply skim coats over popcorn ceiling removal, textured ceiling removal, water damage repairs, drywall replacement, and existing flat ceilings that just need a higher-quality finish for that custom luxury look.

We use professional Festool and Mirka sanding equipment with HEPA-filter dust control. The result? A Level 5 smooth finish — the highest standard in the drywall finishing industry — perfect under any lighting condition. Modern recessed pot lights, chandeliers, natural sunlight — all reveal the same beautiful smooth surface.

We serve homeowners and condo owners across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, and the entire GTA.

Why Choose Master of Ceilings for Skim Coating

Our Professional 5-Step Skim Coating Process

01

Free In-Home Assessment

We inspect your ceiling, measure the area, identify any underlying issues that need addressing first, and provide a clear written quote within 24 hours.

02

Surface Prep

Floor and furniture protection. Surface cleaning. Removal of any loose material. Primer application where needed. The prep work makes or breaks the final finish quality.

03

First Skim Coat

Multi-purpose joint compound applied evenly across the entire ceiling. This first layer fills in all imperfections and creates the foundation.

04

Second & Third Coats

Additional layers, sanded between each coat. Each layer is feathered wider than the last for invisible seamless coverage. This is where the Level 5 quality is built.

05

Final Finish

Final sanding with HEPA dust-controlled equipment. Stain-blocking primer if needed. Optional Benjamin Moore paint. Thorough cleanup. Final walkthrough to confirm you're 100% happy.

Meet Sony — The Master Behind Every Ceiling

Hi, I’m Sony. I founded Master of Ceilings in 2010 with one mission: bring true European craftsmanship to Toronto homes.

For over 15 years, my team and I have skim coated thousands of ceilings — across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, and the entire GTA. I’ve brought century Cabbagetown plaster ceilings back to perfectly flat. I’ve prepped condo ceilings for pot lights near Yonge & Bloor. I’ve finished new custom builds in King City to Level 5. Every ceiling teaches me something new.

“I treat every home like it’s my own. If it’s not perfect, I don’t leave.”

I’m on every job site personally. No subcontractors. No shortcuts. Just clean work, fair pricing, and ceilings that last. When you call 647-972-4858, you talk to me. When my team arrives, I’m there. That’s how Master of Ceilings has been since day one, and that’s how it stays.

Skim Coating FAQs

What's the difference between Level 4 and Level 5 skim coat?
Level 4 is the standard drywall finish — smooth enough for most paint colors and average lighting. Level 5 is luxury custom home standard — perfectly smooth under any lighting including modern pot lights. The difference is one extra plaster layer and more careful sanding. Most homeowners who see both choose Level 5.
2-3 coats minimum, depending on existing ceiling condition. Each layer is sanded smooth before the next coat goes on. We don’t rush this — proper drying between coats prevents cracking later.
Each plaster layer needs 24 hours to dry before the next coat. A full ceiling skim coating project takes 3-7 days depending on size and number of coats. We give you a clear written timeline before starting.
Not with our equipment. We use professional Festool and Mirka HEPA-filter sanders with industrial dust extraction. Most customers are surprised how clean we leave the home — they expect a disaster and get a perfectly clean space.
Sometimes, depending on the texture type. Light textures can sometimes be skim coated over. Heavy stucco usually needs removal first for best results. We assess your specific ceiling during the free in-home quote and recommend the right approach.
Yes. Done with proper multi-layer feathering technique and Level 5 finishing, you should see no visible seams or joints. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to. 1-year workmanship warranty backs this up.

Yes. We clean the surface, prime where needed, and the skim coat bonds fine over painted ceilings. Glossy paint needs an extra prep step, but it’s not a problem.

Almost always, yes. Replacing drywall means tear-out, disposal, new board, taping and finishing. Skim coating uses what’s already up there. We’ll tell you honestly if your ceiling is too far gone to skim — sometimes replacement really is the right call.

Optional, and most customers say yes. We use Benjamin Moore premium ceiling paint. It adds $1.50-$3 per square foot and means the whole job finishes in one project.

Yes. Every project includes a 1-year written workmanship warranty. If anything isn’t right within that year, we come back and fix it.
