Ceiling & Wall Crack Repair in Toronto & GTA

Crack Repair Done Properly — So They Stay Gone

Hairline cracks in your ceiling? Settling cracks running across walls? Ugly stress cracks at corners? Master of Ceilings specializes in ceiling and wall crack repair across Toronto and the GTA. Proper preparation, joint tape, multiple layers of plaster and careful sanding — the way it should be done.

Why Most Crack Repairs Fail (and Ours Don't)

Cracks in your ceiling or walls are frustrating — and they almost always come back if not repaired properly. The reason is almost always the same: the crack was filled and painted over without being opened up, reinforced or properly built back. A thin skim of filler shrinks as it dries and the line reappears in the same spot within a year.

At Master of Ceilings, I’ve been doing crack repair the right way since 2010. We use proper joint tape (paper or mesh depending on crack type), apply 2-3 layers of plaster with each layer feathered wider than the last, and finish with Level 5 skim coat blending. That’s a much stronger repair than a skim of filler, and it holds because we deal with what’s under the surface, not just the line you can see.

We’ve repaired thousands of cracks across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, and the entire GTA since 2010. Whether you have hairline cracks from temperature changes, settling cracks from foundation movement in older homes, or stress cracks at room corners — we know how to fix them permanently.

Every Type of Crack We Fix

What a Proper Crack Repair Actually Involves

The steps that usually get skipped:

  • Don’t widen the crack first (new plaster has nothing to grip onto)
  • Don’t use joint tape (crack reopens along the same exact line)
  • Apply only 1 thin layer of plaster (it shrinks back into the crack)
  • Don’t address the underlying cause if it’s structural

What WE do differently:

  • V-groove or widen the crack to create a proper repair channel
  • Apply professional joint tape (paper for stability, mesh for flexibility)
  • 2-3 layers of plaster with progressively wider feathering
  • Sand between each layer for invisible blending
  • Level 5 skim coat finish
  • Identify and discuss underlying causes honestly

The difference between a 30-minute patch-and-paint and a proper two-day crack repair is what happens a year later.

Our 5-Step Crack Repair Process

01

Free Assessment

We come to your home, inspect each crack, look for signs of what's behind it — movement, temperature, old tape, paint — and give you a written quote within 24 hours. If a crack looks like it needs a structural opinion, we'll say so and tell you who to call. We're ceiling and wall specialists, not engineers.

02

Surface Prep

We widen the crack (V-groove technique) to create proper channel for new plaster. Remove all loose material. Clean the area thoroughly.

03

Joint Tape Application

Paper tape for stable repairs, mesh tape for flexible repairs. The tape prevents the crack from reopening along the same line — this is the step most contractors skip.

04

Multi-Layer Plaster

2-3 layers of professional plaster, each layer feathered wider than the last. Sand between each layer for perfect blending.

05

Level 5 Finish

Final sanding with HEPA-controlled equipment. Optional primer and Benjamin Moore paint. Final walkthrough. 1-year warranty.

Crack Repair Pricing in the GTA

Single Hairline Crack:

$200 – $400

Multiple Small Cracks (3-5):

$400 – $800 (combined pricing)

Large Settling Cracks:

$400 – $1,000 per crack

Full Room with Many Cracks:

$1,000 – $2,500 (often more cost-effective to skim coat entire ceiling)

Add painting:

$1.50 – $3 per sq ft

Honest advice: If a room has more than 5 cracks, we often recommend skim coating the entire ceiling rather than patching individual cracks. It costs about the same and you get a perfectly smooth ceiling.

Meet Sony — The Master Behind Every Repair

Hi, I’m Sony. I founded Master of Ceilings in 2010 with one mission: bring true European craftsmanship to Toronto homes.

For over 15 years, my team and I have repaired cracks in ceilings and walls across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, and the entire GTA. Hairline cracks in new builds. Long settling cracks in century Riverdale homes. Failed tape lines running the length of a hallway. Old lath-and-plaster that cracks every time you look at it. Every crack tells you something about the house if you take the time to look.

“I treat every home like it’s my own. If it’s not perfect, I don’t leave.”

I’m on every job site personally. No subcontractors. No shortcuts. Just clean work, fair pricing, and repairs that hold. When you call 647-972-4858, you talk to me. When my team arrives, I’m there. That’s how Master of Ceilings has been since day one, and that’s how it stays.

Crack Repair FAQs

Why do cracks always come back?

Usually because the crack was filled and painted over without being opened up, taped and built back in layers. A thin skim of filler shrinks as it dries and the line shows again within a year. Do those three steps properly and the repair holds.

Most commonly: temperature and humidity changes, normal house settling, failed drywall tape from the original build, and stress around door and window openings. Older lath-and-plaster ceilings crack simply from age. We look at where the crack runs and how it behaves to work out which one you have.

Most aren’t — they’re cosmetic and annoying rather than a safety issue. But a crack that’s widening, one that runs long and diagonal, or one that comes with doors sticking or floors sloping is worth having looked at properly. We’re ceiling and wall specialists, not engineers. If something looks like it needs a structural opinion, we’ll tell you.

Not in every case, and I won’t pretend otherwise. If the crack is from normal drywall movement or failed tape, a proper repair holds. If the house is still settling or there’s a structural issue behind it, the crack can come back no matter how well it’s repaired — and we’ll tell you that at the quote rather than after. Every repair carries a 1-year written workmanship warranty.

Optional, and most customers say yes. A repaired crack needs primer and paint to disappear completely. On an older ceiling the surrounding paint has aged, so painting just the repair can still show — in that case we’d suggest doing the whole ceiling. We’ll tell you which yours needs.

Usually one to two days for a typical repair. Not because the work takes that long, but because plaster needs to dry properly between coats. Anyone doing it in half a day is applying one layer, and that’s the repair that comes back.

Yes, and it’s different work from drywall. Lath-and-plaster in century Toronto homes needs a gentler approach — the plaster is brittle and pushing too hard opens new cracks beside the one you’re fixing. We’ve done a lot of these in Riverdale, Cabbagetown and The Annex.

Yes. Cracks running diagonally from the top corner of a door or window frame are one of the most common things we see. They’re stress cracks from the house moving around the opening. Same repair method — open, tape, build up in layers, blend.

Then something is still moving, and patching it again won’t help. That’s when we’d suggest getting the cause looked at properly before spending more on the surface. We’d rather tell you that than keep taking your money to repair the same line.

Yes. Every project includes a 1-year written workmanship warranty. If our repair fails within that year, we come back and fix it.
